Winston Roy"Jerry" Lundquist went to be with
the Lord on February 9, 2008. He leaves behind his wife of 43 years,
Marge, and two sons, Brent of Birmingham, AL, and Brian of Sandestin along with
a granddaughter, Carly Lundquist of Boone, NC.
Jerry graduated from Wheaton College with a degree in sociology and earned a
masters degree from University of Southern California and the University of Chicago
in social work. That people-oriented background was a good foundation for his
business ventures which involved working with people in many circumstances -
employees, associates, vendors, volunteers.
After the Lundquist family moved to Tallahassee,
Jerry launched a pictorial real estate magazine, Homes & Land of Tallahassee, which appeared in April 1973.
Within a few years the concept took off and became the nation’s largest
franchise network of community real estate advertising magazines. Over the
years he also began Tallahassee
Magazine and several other business publications, including, through Lund
House, the printing of InTouch
magazine and Walk Through the Bible
magazine.
After selling the Homes
& Land business in 1989, Jerry started a business developing
interactive Compact Discs for the Phillips Company in the Netherlands.
Besides business ventures, Jerry and Marge were involved in
community activities including the early development of the Tallahassee
Symphony Orchestra, and the support of the Southern Scholarship Foundation,
with the building of the Lundquist-Hovda House honoring their fathers, the James
Madison Institute and other organizations.
REMEMBERING JERRY
“I worked with Jerry
at Homes & Land for approximately eight years. During that time, I found
him to be very generous in many ways and a man who loved the Lord and wanted to
honor Him in the things that he did. He was a devoted husband and father…”
-Leon H. Cassels
“Jerry was probably
the last true gentleman I’ll ever know. Every night, after Marge was finished
working, he would pick her up. They would hold hands, and then he would kiss
her.”
-Vanessa Cassidy
“Jerry was a great
mentor to me and my family. He demonstrated a steadfast commitment to Jesus
Christ and His Word through his life’s values of integrity, service, teamwork,
and excellence. Jerry exhibited a Christ-like wholeness both privately and
publicly (integrity)…the heart of Jesus by always being willing to help (service)…
acceptance of others to unify the Body of Christ (teamwork)…and always honored
and glorified God in the good times and tough times (excellence).
-Dr. Jeff Duke
“There are numerous
virtues which come to my mind when I think about him but the one that stands
out was his generosity. He was a man who genuinely enjoyed giving.
Shortly after I came to Tallahassee
I attended a Bible study which met weekly in Jerry’s business office. Then
Jerry asked me to become the regular teacher. When the group’s number rose so
greatly that the office was not roomy enough to accommodate the men wanting to
attend, what did Jerry do? He had a contractor come and enlarge his office! Now
that’s being generous. -Dr. J.
